I was born in 1956 in Chicago.  Since a young age, I was fascinated by WWII and Japan.  When I was 12 years old, I calculated that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was actually an American trap.  I concluded to this because all the battleships there were WWI veterans, and the aircraft carriers were removed prior to the attack.

My father punched me, saying America would never sacrifice the lives of sailors.  The fact is, I was correct, and have written a best selling book on that subject, in Japanese.

Certainly, America is not such a noble country as my father believed.

I came to Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, in December 1974.  This was my first posting as a United States Marine.  I was assigned to the base headquarters office as a clerk.

During the Vietnam war, the United States Communist party maintained an espionage network outside US bases in Japan.  They posed as journalists, but their primary mission was to find evidence of nuclear weapons on US bases.  They would then use that information to damage Japanese/American relations.  Also they performed general espionage, and helped US troops desert from Japan to Sweden through the Soviet Union.

They scouted me, the next day I reported this to my Captain.  He took me to the Naval Intelligence office, and I became an undercover agent working for the US Navy.

I quickly learned to speak Japanese, and fell in love with Japan.  I wanted to do my best on a private level to improve Japanese/American relations.

This view was not shared by my fellow Americans.  At that time, many of my fellow Marines had been to Vietnam, they felt Japan was an enemy country, they could not distinguish between Vietnam and Japan.  Since in my letters to my father, I wrote that I loved Japan, he thought of me as an enemy of America.  His thinking was that America was the best country in the world.  Any American who admired another country must be brainwashed by Communism.  He reported me to the FBI as a Communist agent.

Of course, that created immense problems for me in the Marine Corps.  I quit, and returned to Japan as a civilian.  From the beginning, I was surprised at how people liked America so much.  I felt I must protect Japan from America, Japanese people trust America too much.

Actually, Americans don’t trust each other at all.  That is why there are so many lawyers in America.  Do not trust what Americans say, watch what they do.

An example of Americans lying is the eastward expansion of NATO after the collapse of the Soviet Union.  The Reagan administration made a verbal agreement not to expand NATO into former Warsaw Pact countries.  I remember that on the news.

Subsequent US Presidential administrations pushed NATO east, one of those Presidents said that since there was no written agreement, no such agreement existed.  This laid the basis for the present Ukraine war.
